When are you entitled to a ticket refund?

Reimbursement of your ticket within seven days is contemplated by European regulations when it comes to flight delays, cancellations and incidents of denied boarding: the airline has to pay the full cost of your ticket in cases of flight delays, flight cancellations and denied boarding. Figuring out when you are entitled to a refund of your original ticket can be quite complicated.

Remember that the airline has to give you back the money that you paid (full price) for your ticket in some scenarios. In other situations you will also be eligible to receive a refund if you’ve chosen not to complete your journey. Rest assured, however, because in most cases (it does not matter if it was a cancellation or delay) the airline has to provide you with an option to either reach the final destination in your booking or to take you back to the starting point of your journey.

When am I eligible to receive a ticket refund?

When a flight has been cancelled, you will be entitled to a refund if you do not wish to fly in any of the replacement flights (other options to reach your final destination) offered by the airline itself, or if you weren’t offered one. Even if they notify with enough time in advance in order to not pay compensation (2 weeks), if you do not wish to travel any more you are entitled to a refund.

When a flight has been delayed or cancelled and you’ve missed a connecting flight, you will be entitled to receive a refund for the parts of the journey that were not made. This will also apply only if you do not wish to continue your travel with one of the options presented to you by the airline.

When am I eligible to receive a ticket refund and compensation?

Here it becomes a tad complicated. When your flight has been cancelled, you will be entitled to compensation and a refund if you did not take any of the replacement options that were offered to you (or if you weren’t offered one) and:

  • They did not inform you of your flight’s cancellation 14 days in advance
  • They informed you of your flight’s cancellation between 7 and 14 days in advance but they did not offer you an alternative flight that would let you reach your final destination with a delay lesser than 4 hours when compared to the original ticket. This replacement flight should not depart more than 2 hours earlier than the time established in the original booking
  • They informed you of your flight’s cancellation within 7 days of the departure but they were not able to offer you an alternative flight that would let you reach your final destination with a delay lesser than 2 hours when compared to the original ticket. This flight should not depart more than 1 hour earlier than the time established in the original booking.

I've been refunded, can I still claim compensation for a cancelled flight?

Yes! As stated above, if the cancellation of your flight has not been caused by an extraordinary circumstance, you could get up to £530. It all depends on the distance your flight's route covered:
