European airlines criticised over flight delays

A travel expert has launched a scathing attack of European airlines, accusing them of blocking passengers who seek compensation for delays and cancelled flights.

Raymond Veldkamp from Flight-Delayed.co.uk explained that some airlines simply refuse to share important information regarding delayed flights, while others put barriers in the way of people pursuing compensation.

"Passengers are often not aware of their rights," he told the Daily Telegraph.

"They will," Mr Veldkamp explained, "usually be fobbed off with vouchers for a future flight, when they are entitled to proper compensation".

Mr Veldkamp added that airlines reject claims from consumers 95 per cent of the time and, in some instances, they respond to complaint letters with lots of jargon in an effort to confuse them.

Going forward, he has called on airline carriers to be more open and honest about the issues leading to flight delays and cancellations.

Earlier this week, the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg said that any passenger who is delayed by more than three hours will be compensated by their carrier, unless there are any "extraordinary circumstances" to justify the problem.
