How annoying to hear that your flight has been cancelled! When a flight has been cancelled because of such an event, passengers are not entitled to compensation, but they are entitled to a full refund of their tickets. The coronavirus outbreak is seen as an extraordinary circumstance, which does not require the airline to compensate passengers for a cancelled flight.
Please note, additional compensation is not the same as the right to reimbursement of the ticket! Even during the coronavirus pandemic, airlines are legally obliged to refund the full sum paid for the ticket within 7 days of the flight's cancellation.
The airline has offered me a voucher: should I accept it?
At the moment, many airlines and travel agents only offer vouchers that can be used to book a new ticket in the future. However, this voucher policy is not in line with European legislation EU 261/2004. You are not obliged to accept this voucher - it is a voluntary choice. Based on the EU regulation, you have the right to opt for the full refund of your ticket costs.
In addition to the fact that many airlines currently do not comply with this legislation, vouchers often do not provide any guarantee. In the event that the airline goes bankrupt, you as a passenger will lose your money.
Under European legislation, currently still in place in the UK, claims can be presented up to 6 years after the flight date. In certain countries such as Belgium, Germany and Portugal this period may be shorter. However, the legal expiration period is determined by various factors, including the flight route and the place or places where the airline is based.
